Self-evaluation of task-based presentations

Dear FLE 324 Section 03 members,
Please evaluate your own performance as a pair/group by referring to each of the aspects the self-evaluation sheet that your instructor has provided for you. You need to make comments on the presenter's teaching style, the variety of activities and the creative aspectss of the presentation. You also need to evaluate your performance or the your own group presenter(s)' performance in terms of whether and how the presenter has dealt with the three main cycles of the task-based learning process (e.i., the pre-task, task cycle and the post-task.

  1. Merve KIYMAZ,

In my opinion, our task- based teaching presentation was enjoyable, coherent and cohesive in each and every aspects. We decided to teach modals (should, could) within a scenario which is about agony aunt and advice columns. We created higly interactive procedure, which students can develop their speaking and interpersonal skills, also activities were designed to be related to each other in order to provide meaningful input to the students. To me, our choice of topic is appropriate for task- based teaching; additionally it helped a lot to teach modals in that giving advices in advice columns as an agony aunt includes using suggestive modals such as should could. We tried to create a real -life like atmosphere in which students feel like as a genuine agony aunts and this helped us a lot to teach grammar points without refereeing them too much. Our activities were creative in that they entailed students to be an agony aunt, read the problems and give solutions to them. The idea of being an agony aunt should have been very enjoyable for the students, I think. In addition, we managed to deal with the task- based teaching process with a quite success including all the steps ( the pre-task, task cycle and the post- task by the activities such as discussing what an agony aunt is, then reading the problems and giving solutions to them and the role play activity.)To me, both of us were very enthusiastic and energetic as modelling teachers. In a nutshell, I am highly satisfied our performance and I am thinking of to use task based teaching in my prospective studies.

  2. We arranges our lesson plan for advanced level adults. While we prepare our presentation, we try to find enjoyable and interesting things. Because we want our students to learn something while enjoying. We find tv series as interesting thing. We decide on the 'Family Guy'. Because its language usage is appropriate for advanced learners. We started with asking quesitons about what they will do in the summer. after one of the students say 'watching tv' teacher started to mention tv series and Family Guy. Then he introduce Family Guy characters to students. After that, we arranged a listening activity as a task. We want them to fill in the blenks, select from multiple choice and make true/false activity. With this, We try to provide different acitivities to them. Then we want them to write a different senario to this part. Then we want them to read it.
I think our lesson plan was enjoyable and interesting. We succeed in getting students' attention. In my opinion, most successful part in the lesson plan waswarm up part, we can attract students's attention to lesson with warm up. Also the activities was appropriate for the stage. They did not have difficulty in doing listening activity or writing scenario. I th,nk thy really enjoy while doing writing activity and they want to read it enthusiastically. Also teacher's attitudes is good towards students.
All in all, I can say that, while doing our lesson plan, we anjoy and learn much from it. I hope you enjoy, too.

  3. We could not have a chance to present our presentation in classroom. However, we found chance to compare our lesson plan with others. In Songül's presentation writing events in columns like begining, middle and end could be a bit confusing for students, so we prefered using a story pyramid which would be much more helpful for students while they were telling the story again in their own words. One of the strong point of our lessson plan was that we would do a listening activity and students would take notes about it. We would also show written form of the book while the video was telling the story to make note taking easy for students. For the creative writing part, we had prepared a sheet which contained a picture about an adventure of a rabbit. Also we gave some clues about the story, so students would not have difficulty in creating their own story. This activity would be group work, so it would help to create coopreation and to share ideas among students. If we had a chance to present it, I am sure ıt would be one of the successful presentations in class :)

  4. we prepared a listening based activity for the lesson plan. we used an episode of family guy as our basic activity. bafore the activity, we made the class talk about their favorite tv program to prepare them for the context of the lesson. student talked about their favorite tv program and after that, teacher introduced the basic characters of family guy. he also talked about their personalities.
after then, we made students watch the episode. they listened it and while doing this, they tried to complete the blanks. this test consists of multiple choice questions and blanks. after the listening task, teacher checked the answers ofthe students. then, he implemented a writing task. in this task, students would write the scenery differently, they would think that they were the scenarist of this episode and they would rewrite the scenery.
the personality adjectives were taught to the student.
I think our lesson plan was appropriate for the level of the students.
    it was enjoyable as well.

  5. First of all, we understand that before preparing our lesson plan we didn't know exactly how a task-based lesson plan should be. Therefore we made our presentation one week later than we should have. This helped us to understand the steps in task-based teaching. I think, our lesson plan was organized well according to task-based teaching. Our topic was related to real life. We chose "festivals" because it was the week the spring festivals ended. Therefore we related students daily life with the lesson. In the lesson I forgot to tell students to work on task in pairs but it was a pair activity in the lesson plan. This is because it is better to work in groups or pairs in task-based teaching. we included a language focus part. This part might have been a little wider that we did. We also included activities for the grammar focus. As a whole, I think, our presentation was good and reflected the characteristics of a task-based teaching lesson.

  6. Before we started to do our lesson plan we thought for the topic of the lesson for a long time. Because our students were young learners. So we tried to choose an interesting topic for them. So we decided on ''burglary, theft and robbery''. We thought that besides learning grammar, they would learn some vocabularies. Because meaning differences among those words ''burglary, robbbery and theft'' are not known by everybody. After choosing our topic we started to do our leeson plan. After that I made a presentaion about our topic. I generally tried to choose interesting pictures. So the presentation would both warm the students up and would lead them in the lesson. I think the the powerpoint presentation was effective. After that we passed on the task part. We wanted from students to complete a criminal story. I think such a task can be much interesting for the young learners.Because it is like a game. After the task,we wanted from our students to make a dialog. And that activity developped the student's interpersonal and linguistic intelligences. I was excited during the presentation. But i like my pair's, Öznur, performance. Overall I think it is a good presentation.

  10. While we are preparing our lesson plan, we wanted it to be an enjoyable, applicable and understandable lecture. In order to supply all these points, our teaching style was friendly, inductive and applicable. there were many activities to draw students' attention. we tried to make them join the lecture via making them write news and also their own memories. paying attention student' lives is a good way to start and to conduct the lesson.
unfortunatelyi we could not present our lesson plan. however, I am sure that this lecture would be very interactive, task- based, depending on mission completing and learninig.

  11. We tried to prepare our lesson plan to be consistent with a task based activity. We wanted the students to prepare a birthday party card. We prefer this topic because we thought that it would be related to the real lives of the students so this would be attractive for the students. I think our presenters presented in a cheerful way. In a real classroom atmosphere, presenting in a positive way will help students involve in the activity. I hope our friends liked the presentation.

In a task based lesson plan, the most important step is to find an interesting, attractive and useful task, and then to be able to integrate this task with a grammar structure. We could achieve this by integrating 'while/when + past continous/past simple' structure with the 'writing news' task. at the very begining of the lesson, a newspaper is brought to the classroom as an authentic material. the teacher started the lesson, reding a news from this newspaper to draw the students' attention. we have chosen attractive activities to engage the students in the class as much as possible. for example we gave some pictures from the real news and wanted the students to guess the consequences using their imagination. ın that way, they used the target structure in writing. I wish we had performed our demonstration in the classroom as an example of an interactive and effective lesson.

  13. Our subject was related to conversation skills. Our task was to write advice letter using should/could. We would start our lesson with a real events happened to Canan. She went to a conferance but she did not know how to speak and start to conversation and at the end she could not speak anyone. We would ask our students questions such as “ Did you have experienced such events?” Then, we would show them 3 enjoyable videos. They were very short and funny. Our students can easily understand it because their level was intermediate. We would ask them questions related to videos. We would also distribute a reading passage related to our subject. Thanks to these metarials we provided them to understand the conversation skills better because they would write a letter related to it. Then we created some situations and as a group they would write dialogues compatible with these situations. This activity was really enjoyable and authentic. They would use their imagination. After this activity, they would write advice letter using modal verbs. We had also activity to remind them the modal verbs. As a contingency, we prepared an activity, they would write conversation differences between female-male, female-female, male- female, male-male. This activity provided our students using higher mental ability because they would use their observation and also make some research to write anything related to it. As a conclusion, I used “ would “ above because we could not make demonstration because of time limitation. If we had had a chance to do it , it was a really enjoyable and informative lesson. As you see, we had a lot of activities and their transition was perfect.

  14. Our group members are Alp, Mert, Elif, Hayal and me. We prepared a task based lesson plan for young learners. At first, we had some confusions about task based learning. However, we got information from the instructor, our friends and the internet about what kind of an activity can be used for task based learning. We made use of internet and we found some activities related to task based learning for young learners. I think Alp made an excellent teacher. We, as a group, found approprite vocabulary and reading activities and we adapted them for young learners. We used clear explanations and illustrations in our activities and Alp also used simple, funny and clear language which the young learners may like. On the other hand, our lesson had some drawbacks, too. In the beginning of the lesson, Alp wrote formulations of Simple Past Tense on the board. Using the formulations was apparently not good for young learners. Their learning should be in a unconscious way. The other drawback was that our group and two more groups' activities were based upon the same short story "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". Although the activities were different from each other, it was our mistake to use the same short story. But, in general, we prepared a good lesson plan and the activities and the teaching style were satisfactory for young learners.

  15. Task based was presented by me and Emine. While preparing we wanted to find an enjoyable text. For this reason we tried to find a different story for our students. The level of the story was appropriate for pre intermadiate/ intermediate level students. As the text used to contain so many sentences with past and past perfect tense we decided to choose it as a grammar topic, but there were not enogh exercise for our students to get the topic. In fact we wanted to have an interactive warm up, but there were not many people in the clss and they were not willing to talk, because of that we switched to powerpoint presentation. It was really colorful and effective for our young learners. After PPT we gave the story to the students. We omitted a part for students to complete as a group. We tried to choose the group which was closest to the original text. Then I read the original ending. There was not listening exercise, but we thougt students can get input by listening their teacher. As a last activity students needed to work in pairs and do a role play by using past tense. We thought that this could be useful for production. In this way speaking was also integrated. As an homework we wanted our students to find a strange thief story and tell them in front of the calss next week. This homework lead students to be familiar with technological side of language learning. It was also useful to repeat learned vocabulary items.

  16. I was the teacher of our group(Şerafettin, Mert,Elif, and Hayal). The biggest misfortune for me during the term is choosing a story two other groups also have chose. However, our activities are different from the other groups'. I tried to be a friendly teacher and to create a warm environment. If the time had let us, we would have shown our on-task activites. In those activities, students would be required to create their own role-play cards and perform their roles. I tried to keep my language clear and funny. Some friends criticized my tone, they're right to some extent, however, I intended to attrack the attention of students by changing my tone. I also focused on several students rather than the whole class, it was a mistake, as well. Because of sharing same story with two other groups made me feel panic. Many of my mistakes arose from that fact.
    Sincerely

As Salih mentioned before there was a mistake in our lesson plan but late we managed everything. I think lesson was organized very well according to steps of task-based teaching. As Salih mentioned we chose an enjoyable topic related to real life and this helped students to participate to the lesson. It was about festivals and the lesson was a week after the spring festival so we could relate the situation to the real life of students. Salih and Ozan was very caring to the students during lesson and I think they could manage to follow our lesson plan. However, language focus part could be a little longer in a real classroom. All in all it was a very enjoyable lesson. Thanks to my friends.

  18. We prepared our lesson plan all together and we tried to make it a real task based lesson plan. Our activities were related to birthdays and as we thought this topic was attracting for the students despite of the fact that they were advanced level they began to talk about their birthdays. We wanted them to prepare a birthday party for themselves and they were really creative about that. The invitation cards were also really enjoyable, there were funny things among them. Since this was a task based lesson plan, we were new to it and we had some difficulty. First of all, we decided on our task, this was ' Happy Birthday' and we also chose our students' profile. In order to attract our students, we chose our activities as preparing a birthday party and writing an invitation letter for the party. As you see, activities are interrelated, this was a strength for our lesson. We provided our students with the needed information and sample activities ( such as a sample invitation card) so the instructions were clear and they knew what to do. They seemed to be enjoying the lesson because there were a lot of interesting parties and invitation cards which our students prepared. Züleyha spoke in German by mistake and this also attracted them :) We gave them feedbacks so that they could learn better. Because of time limitations we couldn't everything that we want but anyway we tried to do as much as possible.

  19. My group mates were Şerafettin, Alp, Elif and Hayal. To make a good lesson plan we made us of internet. When we searched for the "task-based" instruction we found a story which was very convenient for task-based insturction. Being too convenient for the lesson made the story chosen by two other groups also :D We were very surprised when we learned that we have the same story with the other two groups; however, when we realized that our activities were way different from theirs we relaxed. Alp was sucsessful as the instructor.

  20. I think our task-based presentation was quite appropriate and enjoyable for the students. It was well-desined according to the students' level and ages. We tried to give all the examples of task-based instruction such as creating information gap and having a task related to the students' own real-life experiences.
The only problem was the time limit. Because of the time, we couldn't be able to present all the activities. We had to hurry up very fast and couldn't have time to check the students's performance or how they were going. Apart from these, our presentatiton was quite useful and was reflecting almost all the points in task-bsed approach.
In my opinion, this presentation can be used in a real class and it can be very efficient in teaching.

  21. The presenters in our group were Salih and Ozan. The selected topic was about festivals and we could easily relate the festival topic to our lesson because a week ago there was spring festival in our school so that our topic became more authentic. As the topic was interesting enough, the students participated actively. Our teachers were very enthusiastic and caring so that the students were motivated in a short time and we,as students, had a good time. Thank for that enjoyable lesson :)

  22. Our group members are Mert, Şerafettin, Elif, Alp and me. For the task-based learning plan we used internet and also we searched what kind of activities we can do. I think selecting the same story with other groups is not a big problem because the most important thing for a lesson is the activities. Alp was a good teacher. His speech was clear and fluent and I think he could attract the students’ attention. He also looked very comfortable while he was teaching. But the writing some rules on the board is not a good way while teaching grammar. If he had given the rules inductively, it would be more useful for the students. However, in general, we prepared a good lesson plan. The activities and the teaching style were satisfactory for young learners

  23. Ceren, Burcu and I presented a sample lesson plan based on task-based learning. We asked for our students to prepare a school newspaper for a task. I think that our lesson plan was a useful one and we were mostly able to follow it. Of course we had some difficulties while we were planning our lesson. At the beginning we were ambigious to decide about the topic and level of our students. And also we have too much difficulty to find the pink newspaper to show them. After we made this decisions we manage the rest more easily. If we qere to teach it again, I would have been changed the oredr of the activities we gave to the students and somehow lighten the work load of each group. Except these I believe we have made a good job.

The lesson was successful, I think, especially the pre-task and the grammar focus parts. As I have said previously we should have changed the two activities order in order to make our students feel more confident about what they would do. We check our students understanding by the task we had given to them. We asked them to read their articles in class and thus we were able to understand whether they comprehend the lesson completely or not. I think that we used speaking and writing skills of the students extensively during the lesson. The students enjoyed the pre-task part of the lesson because we show them a “pink” newspaper and they were surprised. The participation was not too bad, especially when we consider about it’s being the end of the semestre and all of them being very bored and tired. We did not have any difficulties in controlling the class as our students were adults and as their level was advanced.

I think our pre-task part was very successful as we have managed to draw our students attention, make them curious about the topic and arous their enthusiasm for doing the task they would be given later. It was a warm introduction to the lesson, which was closely related to the subject. For the task cycle I can say that if we should have more time we would have done a better job but nevertheless I think it was a successful one. The langage focus part also was briilliant as we give the students an oppurtunity for practice, define the mistakes they have made and correct them.

  24. Emine and Öznur were the people who made the task based approach presentation. Firstly they were quite good about making the students relax. The text they used in the clasrrom was appropriate for the level and age of the students. The text was full of with the examples in past tense so the teachers aimed to make the students to discover it from the text. The activity in which they wanted us to complete took our attention and we had fun because of it. At the end of the lesson the teachers wanted from us to make dialogues. So in a real classroom the lesson can be effective. The teachers explained what we should do clearly.

  25. The presenters in our group were Emine and Öznur. they presented atopic which is about a theft and the children who had a difiiculty without their parents. The topic choice was appropriate for the level and age of the students. they gave students atext which was incomplete and they wanted from them to guess the end of the story. Before that Emine showed us apresentation about vocabulary. The pictures she used were attractive and she took our attention. Then they wanted us to make dialogue related to the text. This activity was fun for us and the activity was appropriate to task based learning.the teachers were good and the lesson too.

  26. Firstly, we decided on suitable topic for task-based lesson plan. Then we prepared our lesson plan, materials and hardcopies. We thought structures used in story-telling and determined simple past tense for the language focus of the lesson plan. We found a very funny video related to our story "Goldilock and three bears" and related pictures to unknown vocabulary items for matching ativity suitable o the elementary level. In order to make all class listento the stroy actively, we planned to give them papers to write the important points from the beginning, middle and end of the story divided parts. we thought that it would be a good idea to give students to act-out their own stories.
I think our micro teaching was very enjoyable for the level-especially the listening part- and effective for the grammar focus. Both I and my friend Songül had very friendly approach towards students and we managed to make our students feel very relaxed and enthusiastic about the lesson and activities. That was one of the succesful points of our lesson.
